  1. Oracle Primavera P6 EPPM

Connecting Oracle Primavera P6 EPPM

This guide walks you through connecting your Oracle Primavera P6 EPPM installation through Makini Link.
Set aside about 15 minutes. Makini connects to P6 through P6 Web Services, the official P6 API. You'll need the P6 Web Services address, your P6 database instance name, and a P6 username and password.

Before you start#

You'll need help from your P6 administrator. The details below come from how P6 was installed at your company. If that isn't you, send them this guide.
Use a P6 user made just for this connection. Don't reuse a person's login. A dedicated user keeps working when people change jobs or passwords, and your administrator can see exactly what it's used for. What the connection can see follows what that user can see in P6.
It must be a P6 user, not a WebLogic account. P6 checks the username and password against its own list of users. The WebLogic accounts used to manage the server won't work here.
Makini connects to the P6 server directly over the internet. The server must accept connections from Makini. If it only accepts connections from inside your network, contact us before you start, so we can agree how to reach it.

Step 1: Create a P6 user#

Ask your P6 administrator to create a P6 user for Makini, with a strong password, and access to the projects you want to connect.
Keep the username and password somewhere safe for a moment. A password manager is best.

Step 2: Collect the connection details#

From the same administrator, get:
The P6 Web Services address. It usually runs on the same server as the P6 web application but on a different port, 8206 by default, and ends in /p6ws/restapi. For example: https://p6.example.com:8206/p6ws/restapi. The address you open P6 in your browser (often on port 8203) is not this one.
The P6 database instance name, from P6's own configuration. For example: P6PDB. This is not always the same as the Oracle database's service name, so ask for the name P6 uses.
If you're not sure P6 Web Services is set up on your installation, your P6 administrator can confirm.

Step 3: Enter your credentials#

1.
Fill in the form in Makini Link:
P6 Web Services URL: the P6 Web Services address from Step 2
P6 Database Instance Name: the database instance name from Step 2
P6 Username: the P6 user from Step 1
P6 Password: that user's password
2.
Under Advanced settings there's one optional field. Most connections leave it as it is:
Connection Method: leave it on REST (recommended). Choose SOAP Web Services only if your administrator says your installation has only SOAP web services enabled.
3.
Click Connect.

Keeping the connection working#

Treat the password like any other password. Don't email it, don't put it in a chat message, don't save it in a shared document.
Things that will break the connection
Changing the P6 user's password: enter the new password on the connection
Disabling or deleting the P6 user: create a new one and connect again
Moving P6 Web Services to a different server or port: update P6 Web Services URL on the connection
Firewall or network changes that block the route to the P6 server

If something goes wrong#

The login was rejected, but the username and password are right.
It says it can't reach the server.
It was working, now it isn't.
Still stuck?
Send us a note describing which step you're on and what you're seeing. Don't include the password in that message.
